Carer Support Service (CSS) was originally established in 1996 to provide assistance to carers in the Sutherland Shire. Since then our services have expanded into South East Sydney Local Health District, which includes Sutherland Shire, St George area and Eastern Suburbs. We also have a Resilient Carer Program and Outreach Service operating in the Illawarra. To help them in their caring role, the CSS organises support groups and educational programs for carers and provides information to groups and individuals about respite and other services available.
CSS aims to improve the quality of life of unpaid carers by supporting them in their role in caring for a relative or friend who is frail or has a disability.
The outcomes pursued by CSS are:
A carer is a relative or a friend who cares for someone who, because of chronic illness, disability or frailty, would be unable to remain living independently in the community without such care. The purpose of the Carer Support Service is to improve the quality of life of carers by supporting them in their caring role.
Most events and activities are FREE to carers. There are some cover charges to some events and the Carers Weekend away. Carers who would like to participate but who may be experiencing financial difficulties are encouraged to discuss this with staff.
CSS is for carers who reside in the Sutherland Shire, St George and Eastern Sydney Local Government Areas. We also operate a Resilient Carer Program in the Illawarra LHD.
As from April 6, the Commonwealth Government's Carer Gateway is now operational, with The Benevolent Society being provider for Carer Gateway in our region - Central, Eastern and Northern Sydney areas. We encourage all carers to contact the Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737 for
Carer Support Service has unfortunately had to suspend face to face support groups due to COVID-19 restrictions. We are looking forward to resuming our group meetings as soon as it is safe and practicable to do so. We know carers value connecting with each other.
